JHU Advanced Physics Lab: Rutherford scattering

In this experiment you will study structure of an atom, following historic experiment by Rutherford and his team.

Be careful with the gold foil, read here!

Technical description is available here .

First make sure that your setup is working and you have good measurements at low angles. Then start increasing angles and allow increasing time intervals for your measurements, which you can estimate from theoretical dependence and from a requirement to have a good measurement (what is this requirement? state your criteria). This experiment may require several days to collected good data and large angles.

Note that if the gold foil is damaged, your measurement may be spoiled somewhat, but still try your experiment with both gold and aluminum foil. Be careful not to damage the foil further.

Prior notes on this experiment may be helpful and can be found here and here .
